On the evening of September 28, 2024, officers working the "Bruegala" event in downtown Bloomington responded to reports of an intoxicated person lying on the ground near a live band. Upon arrival, police located a male subject asleep on the sidewalk with a visible cut on his forehead. When officers attempted to check his welfare, the subject became belligerent, claiming he was being harassed and stating he "didn't give a fuck" about his injury. After refusing to leave and grabbing a trash can in a threatening manner, officers physically escorted him out of the event area. Minutes later, the subject returned to the scene and aggressively advanced toward the officers, squaring his shoulders and yelling obscenities. Fearing a physical attack, officers pushed the subject back. When he charged a second time, he was pushed to the ground, handcuffed, and placed under arrest. Outcome: The subject was arrested for Aggravated Assault on Police and transported to jail. He was later released on a Notice to Appear (NTA) with a court date scheduled for October 17, 2024. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
