Tardigrades are often called indestructible, but that is not exactly true. For more than 250 years, scientists have tested what these tiny animals can survive — drying out, freezing, radiation, open space, and even a crash on the Moon. In this video, we follow the record of those experiments, from the first “water bear” discovered in 1773 to modern space missions and radiation tests. Tardigrades can enter a paused state called cryptobiosis, where they lose almost all the water in their body, curl into a tiny tun, and wait until conditions improve. They can survive vacuum, extreme cold, high radiation, and decades in frozen moss. But they can still be killed when they are active, hydrated, overheated, eaten, poisoned, or dried too fast. They are not truly indestructible. They are just very good at stopping life before life stops them. Watch until the end to see what actually kills a tardigrade.
