On June 22, 2025, Las Cruces Police Officer Lopez was waved down by several motorists. One witness explained that the driver of a Jeep, a 25-year-old woman, had been driving erratically, nearly causing a collision with oncoming traffic. The Jeep had crossed the median, drove the wrong way towards oncoming traffic, and hit several plastic poles before being stopped by bystanders. One of the bystanders indicated that his girlfriend had parked the Jeep to prevent further danger and that the driver was incoherent. Officer Lopez located the driver sitting near a Jack in the Box. The police report identified the woman as being disoriented. She admitted to drinking while floating on the river earlier that day. She was requested to perform standard field sobriety tests, which she refused. She was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated (DWI). During the arrest process, the woman initially refused to provide her last name and date of birth. She was read the New Mexico Implied Consent Act, but she refused to submit to a breath test. She was charged with (1) Aggravated DWI; and (2) Having Open Containers. The outcome of her case is unknown.
