On January 20, 2024, Las Cruces police officers responded to a single vehicle collision. When officers arrived, the 20-year-old driver of the crashed vehicle was sitting in the backseat of a friend's vehicle. She initially admitted to driving, but her story changed and she denied multiple times that she was the driver of the crashed vehicle. She did, however, admit to consuming alcohol. She was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests and she was eventually arrested for DUI. At the police station, she consented to an evidential breath test. Her first sample was a 0.19% BAC, but she failed to provide an adequate amount of breath for the 2nd sample, and the test was deemed to be a refusal. She was transported to the Dona Ana County Detention Center, where she was charged with aggravated driving while under the influence and failure to exercise due care. All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
