While conducting a routine patrol, Akron Police officers observed a green Ford Econoline Van traveling northbound on Madison Ave with a non-functional plate light. Subsequently, the vehicle turned westbound onto Whittier Ave. The officers initiated a traffic stop using their overhead lights, prompting the vehicle to pull into a driveway. Upon their arrival, a passenger exited the vehicle and proceeded towards the porch despite verbal commands from the officers to remain in place. The officers requested the passenger's identification while conducting checks. Simultaneously, dispatch alerted Patrol Car 23 to a reported altercation at Madison Ave (incident #24-17), describing the suspect as a black male with multiple tattoos, wearing a white t-shirt, black pants, and yellow shoes, by the name of Griffin. The caller alleged that Griffin had brandished a firearm during the altercation. Upon observation, officers noted that Griffin matched this description and detained him. Acting on dispatch information, officers conducted a search of the immediate area surrounding Griffin's passenger seat and discovered a loaded firearm positioned behind it, within easy reach of Griffin. The firearm was equipped with an extended magazine containing a round in the chamber. Officers then interviewed the caller, who identified Griffin as her intoxicated boyfriend involved in a dispute over their relationship. She claimed that Griffin had thrown her TV, pointed a gun at her, and physically assaulted her. Despite her injuries, she declined EMS assistance and opted not to pursue charges. The officers provided the caller with information regarding victim assistance and explained the available options for obtaining a protection order. Griffin was subsequently charged with weapons under disability and carrying a concealed weapon. Photographs documenting the caller's injuries and the property damage were uploaded to Evidence.com. The vehicle was towed as the driver/owner was not present at the scene. ⚠️Note: Footage from this video was obtained via the Ohio Public Records Act (R.C. 149.43) All persons featured on the channel are to be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
