Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell held a news conference Wednesday afternoon to discuss a recent deputy-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 53-year-old Michael Lewis Schwartz. Prummell explained that on Thursday, Jan. 16, at around 5 p.m., dispatchers received reports of a man walking along the 2600 block of Eager Road, shouting, “Where are the cops at?” while firing a gun into the air. During the briefing, Prummell shared body cam footage and details surrounding the fatal encounter. He noted that Schwartz had a history of mental health struggles, including bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. Deputies had interacted with Schwartz previously, including in October and on Jan. 12, regarding a fraud case involving a former neighbor. In both incidents, Schwartz exhibited signs of paranoia and increasing agitation. On the day of the shooting, deputies arrived to find Schwartz sitting in a chair on the porch of a home. When they approached, Schwartz reportedly pulled out a 9mm handgun, cocked and ready to fire. Deputies responded by firing five rounds, striking Schwartz three times. According to Prummell, Schwartz was on 68 medications at the time and had written concerning messages on his walls, including threats directed at specific individuals and a mention of shooting a deputy. Investigators are still determining whether this was a case of “suicide by cop.” Neighbors and family members described Schwartz as erratic and unstable, living alone and displaying troubling behavior. Despite the tense confrontation, no deputies were injured in the incident. 0:00 - Description of events 0:16 - 911 call 1:01 - Deputy 1 bodycam 1:30 - Suspect stands up and points gun at deputies 2:04 - Replay of the scene 2:13 - Deputy 2 bodycam 2:35 - Deputy 3 bodycam 2:45 - Results of initial investigation #CharlotteCounty #DeputyInvolvedShooting #MentalHealthCrisis #EagerRoadIncident #MichaelLewisSchwartz #PoliceShooting #BipolarDisorder #Schizophrenia #LawEnforcementNews #FloridaNews #SuicideByCop #BodyCamFootage #CCSONews #PublicSafety #MentalHealthAwareness Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
