Please like, comment, and SHARE! 🙏 🔍 Episode Overview: At about 1:17 a.m. on April 11, 2024, Officer James Holub was patrolling near Main Street and US Route 14 in Crystal Lake. He saw a 2023 Ford F-150 drift between lanes. Its driver appeared to be texting as she headed south on Main Street toward Route 14. Holub followed her and soon stopped the truck near James R. Rakow Road and Pyott Road. The driver was Lauren Messer. While speaking with Messer, Holub smelled alcohol and saw signs that she might be impaired. She could not show proof of valid insurance. Another officer arrived to assist, and they asked her to step out for sobriety tests because they suspected she had been drinking. Messer first refused the tests. After officers told her they would arrest her, she agreed. They removed her handcuffs so she could complete the checks. When the tests were over, they offered her a breath test, but she refused. Officers then arrested her for DUI. Holub took Messer to the Crystal Lake police station for booking. Officers read her the motorist warning, but she again refused to provide a breath sample. Holub obtained a blood-test warrant and took her to Mercy Health Hospital. Staff drew her blood and completed the required forms. She was then released until her court date. Messer was initially cited for driving under the influence of alcohol (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(2)), using a phone while driving (625 ILCS 5/12-610.2), failing to stay in her lane (625 ILCS 5/11-709), and driving without insurance (625 ILCS 5/3-707(a)). Her blood test showed a level above 0.08, so officers added a DUI citation for a BAC of 0.08 or higher (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(1)). Messer had faced another DUI arrest in Crystal Lake years earlier.
