On September 22, 2023, around 3:52 PM, Patrolman Matthew Schou of the Eatontown Police Department responded to a shoplifting report at the Target store located at 56 State Highway 36. According to Target’s Asset Protection, a woman wearing a denim jacket had pushed a shopping cart out of the store after paying for only part of her merchandise at the self-checkout. The unpaid items were still in her cart as she walked away. Officer Schou waited for backup before heading into the nearby TJ Maxx to search for the suspect. Less than a minute after entering, officers located 25-year-old Maryeris Ernestina Velasquez Joya, still pushing a Target shopping cart inside the TJ Maxx. She was escorted outside, where officers began to inventory the stolen merchandise. Inside the cart, they discovered an Elvie Stride Plus hospital-grade breast pump valued at $319.99 along with approximately $180 in stolen female cosmetic products, bringing the total value to nearly $500. With evidence from both witness accounts and surveillance footage, Maryeris was placed under arrest for shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(1). Patrolman Daniel Gilligan transported her to the Eatontown Police Department, where she was photographed, fingerprinted, and processed. She told officers she was from Nicaragua and worked as a housekeeper, but could not provide a social security number. Records show this was not her first offense, she had been arrested for shoplifting at the same Target just two weeks earlier, on September 7, 2023. Maryeris was released at 5:20 PM with a summons to appear in court on November 14, 2023.
