Newly released body-worn and dash-cam footage from the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office (Las Cruces, New Mexico) shows a 12-year-old boy leading deputies on a lengthy pursuit in a stolen SUV before crashing head-on into another vehicle. According to authorities, deputies received multiple calls on September 12, 2021 about a juvenile driving recklessly through the Las Alturas area. When deputies located the vehicle and attempted a stop, the boy fled — leading units through residential streets, onto I-25, and along Highway 70 before pulling into a parking lot, where three other boys who had been picked up along the way jumped out. The driver continued alone and ultimately crashed into oncoming traffic. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Deputies later found ammunition in the boy's pocket and recovered a handgun believed to have been thrown from the vehicle during the chase.
