OBERLIN, OH - On February 23rd, 2020 at 7:59PM, Oberlin Police recieved a call regarding a grey Ford F-150 traveling northbound on State Route 58 that was allegedly running off the road and into curbs. The caller made contact with the responding units and advised that the vehicle had changed direction and was traveling southbound towards the city limits of Oberlin. The officer observed the vehicle matching the description weave over and onto the double yellow line. The officer then activated his emergency lights and pulled over the vehicle. The officer detected an odor of alcoholic beverage from the breath of the driver who had a difficult time locating the insurance information inside his vehicle. The suspect was asked to step out of the vehicle to look for his information to which he obliged. The suspect claimed that he did not drink during the evening because he was recently hospitalized in a detox center for alcoholism. The officer asked the suspect to participate in field sobriety tests to which he consented. Prior to starting the tests, the sergeant on scene allowed the suspect to blow into a breathalyzer which yielded a result of .177% breath alcohol content (BrAC). During the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the suspect displayed lack of smooth pursuit and distinct and sustatined nystagmus at maximum deviation in both eyes. For the walk-and-turn test, the suspect removed himself out of the starting position while being instructed on how to perform the test, used his arms for balance, and made an improper turn. The suspect was then unable to participate in the one leg stand test due to medical issues. At the conclusion of the field sobriety tests, the suspect claimed that he did not drink at any point during the evening. At this point, the suspect was arrested and brought to the Oberlin Police Department whereupon he was formally charged with two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI).
