New Orleans. 1918. A serial killer attacked sleeping families with their own axes — chiseling through back doors in the night. Six dead. No identity. No arrest. Then he wrote a letter to the newspaper. He claimed to be a demon from hell. He said he would kill again on March 19th but would spare any household playing jazz music at fifteen minutes past midnight. The entire city played jazz that night. Nobody was killed. The last victim's widow shot the prime suspect dead in Los Angeles. She said he confessed to being the Axeman. No charges were ever filed. The case is still open.
