On July 4, 2023, in Del Norte County, California, Highway Patrol officers on Oceanview Drive near Spyglass Road in Smith River tried to pull over a Buick Lucerne with expired tags. The driver refused to yield and sped off towards Highway 101, turning north into Oregon at speeds exceeding 90 MPH. After several minutes, while attempting to evade the officers, the driver narrowly avoided a collision, crossing back over Highway 101 and heading up Winchuck River Road into the mountains of Curry County, Oregon. Near mile marker 8.5, the car slowed, and two passengers leapt from the backseat. The officers continued the pursuit for a brief period before ending the chase and returning to assist the passengers who had jumped from the vehicle. It was discovered that the two individuals had been unwillingly confined by the driver since leaving the casino and seized the opportunity to escape when the vehicle slowed. Subsequent investigation at the Lucky 7 Casino confirmed the suspect's identity and vehicle ownership as Robert Snyder, known to the officers from prior interactions.
