The shooting happened on the 3900 block of 41st Street around 11:30 a.m. or so, Sgt. Kionna Rowe said. A heavy law enforcement presence was in the area of 14th Avenue and 41st and 42nd streets. The deputies, seven-year veterans, fired their weapons after the suspect emerged from a home with a gun and while holding his girlfriend hostage, Rowe said. The situation unfolded after 10:10 a.m. when a 911 caller said that she, her boyfriend and their 3-year-old child were in a home and overheard a dispute between the caller's father and his girlfriend, Rowe said. She added that the caller, who was the man's daughter, saw her father brandishing a weapon before everyone fled the house except the father and his girlfriend. The daughter said he threatened her, her boyfriend and his granddaughter. "He was making statements that he was going to shoot. He wanted to shoot a cop," she said. The man came outside 10 minutes later while holding a gun and holding his girlfriend hostage, Rowe said. That's when the two deputies on the SWAT team opened fire, killing him. The man was a 55-year-old man from Sacramento County with an extensive criminal history, the sheriff's office said. The suspect did not fire his weapon, Rowe said. Rowe said deputies are never sure how the suspect will react and have to make quick decisions. "Nobody wins. Our officers, they don’t want to do this. And certainly the family left shattered don't want this. It's an awful situation," she said. Relatives of the man who did not want to be identified said this incident is out of character for him. "He was a funny guy. You always wanted to be around him. He joked around and was a very good guy," the woman said. "Something happened. He wouldn’t do something like that. He wouldn’t act like that."
