Warren police on Wednesday released new details and video camera footage of a fatal car chase with officers the day after Christmas that left a man dead, maintaining that they were doing their job. A 24-year-old man died in a collision after police chased the Warren driver for evading a traffic stop on Dec. 26. "It's an unfortunate incident, because this subject is dead due to the choice he made to flee from the officers," said Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer. The pursuit began around 12:09 p.m. near Van Dyke and Stephens Road, after the man, who was driving a red 2015 Chevrolet Cruze, drove away from the Warren police who pulled him over. The officers had asked the man to step out of the car. After he said he did not have identification on him, the driver shifted the car and sped away, according to a press release. Video footage shows Warren police chased the driver for about three minutes onto northbound Lawrence Avenue and into Center Line, following him into a grassy field and 10 Mile before heading west on Ryan Road. Police followed the driver at "moderate speeds," Dwyer said Wednesday. The driver ran through a red light and crashed beneath the trailer of a Ford pickup truck. Officers called firefighters to the scene and tried to rescue the driver, who medics pronounced dead at the scene. Police supervisors authorized and monitored the officers' chase in real time, a judgement call Dwyer said he supported after reviewing the case. Officers initially pulled him over for having expired license plates, Dywer said. Police did not know the driver's identity until after the crash, Dwyer said. "In many, many cases, maybe in the majority of cases we run into, when we have a fleeing and eluding particular case, that always leads up to someone that was either wanted on a felony, convicted of a felony, or going to commit a felony," Dwyer said. Police later learned the man had a misdemeanor warrant for a traffic violation, Dwyer said. The man also had a 2018 Oakland County felony conviction and a 2019 Wayne County felony conviction for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, Dwyer said. Police found a loaded Glock semi-automatic handgun on the car's floorboard after the crash, Dwyer said. That gun was previously reported stolen, he said. "We all feel bad that someone died, but the officers were doing their job," Dwyer said. "If he would have stopped, he would be with us today."
