On June 25, 2022, officers with the St. Petersburg Police Department were flagged down after 20-year-old Maria Perez rear-ended another vehicle near 2nd Avenue North and 1st Street North in St. Petersburg, Florida. Officers said Perez appeared confused, struggled to move her car out of traffic, handed over an employee ID instead of her driver’s license, and repeatedly argued that she had not caused the crash. After officers observed bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, the odor of alcohol, and an empty alcoholic beverage can, Perez participated in field sobriety tests. She was arrested for DUI with property damage, and her failure to cooperate with the breath-testing process was recorded as a refusal.
