A Jeep had hit a stop sign in the Wendy's lot at 728 Route 15 South. Witnesses saw it crash and speed off. The front bumper with license plate dropped as it fled. Veliu grabbed the bumper and plate. A check showed it belonged to a 2007 Jeep Cherokee. Registered to Courtney in Morristown. Dispatch added her parents' old address near Lake Hopatcong. Veliu drove to the Lake Hopatcong house first. Two cars sat in the driveway. Not the Jeep. He knocked. No answer. As he checked the neighborhood, dispatch called again. A matching Jeep was at Taphouse 15, 75 Route 15 North. He pulled up at 3:24 p.m. And started a stop. Courtney was behind the wheel. Veliu spotted signs she was impaired. She couldn't say the alphabet without singing. Couldn't count backward either. He asked her out for sobriety tests. First came the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus check. Officers Mark Williams and Christopher Fabian showed up to help. Next, Walk and Turn. Then One Leg Stand. She failed them all. The crash plus bad tests led to arrest. They impounded her Jeep for 12 hours under John's Law. In the patrol car, Veliu read the standard statement. She agreed to breath tests. Jefferson's breathalyzer was down, so he took her to Sparta Township Police. There, she said her cousin was a State Trooper. Officer Erick Finley ran the Alcotest. Her BAC hit 0.31%. Nearly four times over the 0.08% limit. They brought her back to Jefferson for processing. No one could take her. Officers said no to Uber. Off to the hospital she went. Veliu gave her tickets: driving under influence, reckless driving, careless driving with damage, leaving accident scene with damage, failure to report accident. In November 2023, court found her guilty of DUI and not reporting. She got an ignition interlock for four years. Forty-eight hours at drunk driver school. Thirty days community service.
