On June 3, 2026, an 18-year-old driver in Eureka California, Humboldt County attempted to evade a traffic stop by a Humboldt County Sheriff's deputy before crashing his mother's Hyundai Elantra near Pickett Road and Grace Lane. The driver reportedly accelerated away before losing control and crashing into a curb and roadside property according to the Deputy. The teenager later told officers he had been traveling approximately 80 MPH before the collision. When California Highway Patrol officers were investigating the crash, they observed signs of possible alcohol impairment. The driver reportedly admitted to drinking between three and five shots of tequila. CHP officers conducted a DUI investigation that included field sobriety tests, preliminary alcohol screening, and chemical breath testing. Preliminary Alcohol Screening (PAS) reading were: - .209% BAC and - .194% BAC. Chemical Breath Tests results were: - 0.25% BAC and - 0.24% BAC. For an 18-year-old driver a 0.25% BAC puts him at 25 times California's .01% zero-tolerance limit for drivers under 21. California Vehicle Code 23136 establishes a .01% alcohol threshold for drivers under 21, compared with the standard .08% per se DUI threshold applicable to adult drivers. The driver was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Jail on the following charges: - 23152(a) — Driving under the influence of alcohol - 23152(b) — Driving with a BAC of .08% or higher - 20002(a) — Misdemeanor hit-and-run - 12500(a) — Driving without a valid driver's license - 16028(a) — Failure to provide proof of insurance The investigating officer also recommended DUI-related sentencing enhancements.
