On August 24, 2024, Rio Rancho police responded to a shoplifting call at a Walmart after employees flagged suspicious activity at self-checkout. What started as a call about two teenagers running through the store quickly turned into something bigger when officers noticed their father skip-scanning items — including several meat products — at the register. The man was later identified as an executive editor and vice president at one of New Mexico's largest newspapers. The final unpaid total came to just over $100. He was charged with misdemeanor shoplifting and resigned from his position shortly after the arrest became public. Welcome to Sgt. Consequences.
