On February 27, 2025, at approximately 1:55 p.m., Police Officers Remy Garcia-Marte and Jennifer Lee responded to ShopRite, 900 Madison St., on reports of two shoplifters who were in custody of store security. Upon arrival they learned that two individuals, later identified as 66- year-old male of West New York and 62-year-old female of West New York were seen putting items in a bag, covering the bag with a coat, and going through the check-out without scanning $143.86 worth of merchandise. He was also seen putting vitamins in his jeans pocket, which he did not pay for. Sgt. Jonathan Figueroa arrived on the scene to assist. Both were placed under arrest and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters where they were charged with shoplifting. After being processed, both were released with a summons. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
