A driver who evaded law enforcement across multiple counties in Ohio reached speeds of 95 to 100 mph on Interstate 77 on Wednesday morning, according to investigators. Authorities in Seville initially pursued the dark green 2006 GMC 2500 truck, suspecting its involvement in daytime break-ins in the village of Seville, situated in southern Medina County. A sergeant from the Seville Police Department spotted the vehicle and trailed it, attempting to establish probable cause for a traffic stop, said Lt. Scott A. Schmoll of the Medina County Sheriff's Office. Deputies from the Medina County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the situation."The Seville sergeant observed a turn signal violation and was advised to go ahead and initiate the traffic stop until a deputy could arrive," Schmoll stated in a prepared statement. "When he activated his emergency overhead lights at (Interstate) 76 and (State Route) 94, the vehicle failed to stop and fled from the sergeant." The sergeant terminated the pursuit shortly after but continued following at a distance without emergency lights, monitoring the vehicle's movements. The truck was lost sight of in the vicinity of State Route 261 and Cleveland Massillon Road in Norton.A sergeant from the Medina County Sheriff’s Office then located the truck and again attempted to halt it, but the vehicle fled once more, investigators said. The pursuit traversed I-76 and surface roads in Norton, Barberton, and Akron. At one point, the suspect ran a red light and collided with another motorist on the driver's side. Despite the crash, the truck driver managed to continue without injuries reported. Subsequently, the fleeing truck entered southbound I-77. Ohio State Highway Patrol joined the chase with two troopers, positioning themselves to box in the truck and eventually bring it to a stop near I-77 and U.S. Route 30 in Canton, as per Schmoll. The driver, identified as a Medina resident, was taken into custody and transported to Medina County Jail. He will face charges of failing to use a turn signal while changing lanes, along with felony fleeing and eluding. "This was written by Nancy at 330-580-8382 or nancy.molnar@cantonrep.com."
