On the morning of March 20, Chicago police responded to a domestic disturbance involving a person with a gun at an apartment complex in the 900 block of East 100th Street. According to authorities, an armed man was inside a bedroom with a woman. The man, identified as 43-year-old Devon L. Smith, allegedly pointed a firearm at an officer. In response, the officer fired multiple shots, striking Smith. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition but was later pronounced dead. Body camera footage released by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability captures the events inside the apartment. The video shows someone unlocking the door to let officers in. After announcing their presence, the officers begin searching the residence, with one heading upstairs. As they pass through a bathroom, a door opens to reveal Smith and a woman. The officer immediately yells “hands up” and “gun, we got a gun,” as Smith appears to be holding an object in his right hand. Moments later, the woman runs out of the room, and the officer fires five times. Smith falls to the floor, and as the officer moves in to handcuff him, a firearm is visible near his right hand. A police report states that Smith was shot in the forearm, chest, and abdomen. He succumbed to his injuries about an hour after the shooting. 0:00 - Preview 0:07 - Description of events 0:21 - 911 call 2:05 - Officer bodycam 5:23 - Shooting 5:42 - Slowdown and zoom #PoliceShooting #BodyCamFootage #ChicagoNews #OfficerInvolvedShooting #BreakingNews #ChicagoPolice #East100thStreet #ChicagoCrime #ChicagoIncident #IllinoisNews #DomesticDisturbance #PoliceResponse #GunIncident #UseOfForce #LawEnforcement #CaughtOnCamera #PoliceFootage #PublicAccountability #JusticeSystem #COPA Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
