This video captures a tense traffic control incident that occurred on the evening of Independence Day. An on-duty police officer wearing a reflective vest and holding a lighted baton was directing vehicles away from a barricaded street in a very crowded area. One driver completely refused to follow the detour, yelled at the officer, and proceeded to make an illegal left turn directly into the blocked zone. During this illegal maneuver, the vehicle struck the officer, causing minor injuries to his thigh and knee. Emergency medical personnel treated the officer right at the scene. Backup units quickly arrived and initiated a traffic stop on the offending vehicle. Officers soon determined the suspect was not the registered owner of the car. The driver was taken into custody and charged with assault by auto, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, along with a traffic summons for failing to comply with directions. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty
