On December 27, 2024, at approximately 7:21 PM, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were conducting routine patrols in the city of Oakland, Alameda County, using an automated license plate reader (LPR) system in their patrol vehicle. The LPR system quickly alerted officers to a stolen Chevrolet pickup truck while they were patrolling International Boulevard near 42nd Avenue. Upon receiving the alert, the driver of the stolen vehicle, later identified as Eric Dean Rice, fled the scene at a high rate of speed, driving recklessly as officers attempted to make a traffic stop. CHP Air 37 responded immediately, tracking the suspect's vehicle from the air and providing real-time updates to ground units. The aerial support unit successfully located the suspect’s truck and followed Rice as he attempted to evade capture. The pursuit ended when Eric Dean Rice stopped the stolen pickup truck on Aqua Vista Street. The suspect exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident. No additional individuals were involved in the arrest. This case highlights the effectiveness of license plate recognition technology and airborne law enforcement support in apprehending suspects involved in vehicle theft and evasion.
