At approximately 7:43 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 600 block of West Madison Street after reports of a man armed with a knife. Due to the nature of the call, officers responded under the assumption that an active and potentially life-threatening situation was unfolding. When the first officer arrived, two individuals — later identified as the suspect’s wife and stepdaughter — were seen running from the residence. Both had sustained stab wounds and were visibly injured. Following them into the yard was 53-year-old Matthew Blanke, who was holding a knife. According to police, the responding officer issued repeated commands for Blanke to drop the weapon. Authorities say Blanke continued moving forward while still armed. The officer then discharged his firearm, striking Blanke. Additional officers arrived shortly afterward and began providing medical aid. Despite life-saving efforts, Blanke was pronounced deceased at the scene. The two injured individuals were transported to a nearby hospital and treated for injuries that were reported as non-life-threatening. No officers were injured during the incident. The O’Fallon Police Department requested that the Illinois State Police conduct an independent investigation. The case was later reviewed by the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office. On November 25, prosecutors announced that the officer’s actions were determined to be legally justified and that no criminal charges would be filed.
