Police bodycam footage from downtown San Diego: a man barricaded in a fourth-floor apartment with a knife and a baseball bat sets the unit on fire, and when officers finally breach the door he comes out swinging the knife. This real police bodycam video from the San Diego Police Department combines body camera, police drone and firefighter footage of the full standoff and the officer-involved shooting that ended it. WHAT HAPPENED June 23, 2026, just after 1:00 PM. The manager of an apartment building in the 1600 block of 6th Avenue in the Cortez Hill neighborhood calls 911 to report that a resident has just been assaulted. The victim tells dispatchers her 32-year-old son, Josue White, is armed with a large knife and a baseball bat and has barricaded himself inside her apartment. Officers go to the fourth-floor unit, call out to him and phone him repeatedly. He never answers. As the standoff continues he throws household items from the balcony, striking one officer in the face and damaging two patrol cars. At about 2:05 PM officers see heavy smoke coming from the apartment. They go door to door evacuating residents while other officers breach the front door, which has been barricaded from the inside. A police K9 is sent in but does not find White, who is hiding in a room behind a closed door. As the smoke gets worse, officers pull back and call San Diego Fire-Rescue. Firefighters put out the kitchen fire while officers provide cover, but there is still no sign of White. Officers then send a drone into the apartment. It lands facing the closed door. When officers breach it, White immediately comes out advancing toward them, making stabbing motions with the knife. Officers Jordan, Steinbach and Esambolchi fire. This video cuts away at that moment and does not show the shooting. OUTCOME Officers provided medical aid. White was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim and two officers were treated for minor injuries. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit is investigating; the San Diego County District Attorney, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office are reviewing the case, and SDPD Internal Affairs and the Commission on Police Practices are conducting separate reviews.
