The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office released a video detailing new information of a deadly deputy-involved shooting that happened in December. deputies were called to an address on Pequot Drive on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, after they received a 911 call regarding a disturbance between a man and woman. During the calls, 81-year-old Walter McDonald can be heard telling 911 dispatchers that his wife would like to speak with them. “My wife would like to speak with you guys. She would like to talk about an issue. Are you ready?,” said McDonald. “Do not come with blue lights and ambulance and b******.” After he said this, the 911 dispatcher asked McDonald to put his wife on the phone. His wife told dispatchers she does not think it is an emergency. She goes on to tell the dispatcher that her husband is making her uncomfortable. “I don’t know if he’s going to try to do anything with me or not,” she said. “I think he is having an affair some other women and I don’t know what is happening. And I confronted him and he got kind of aggressive....I really don’t know how to... I don’t know how to address this situation.” Following their conversation, the dispatcher told her to get to a safe location until law enforcement arrived. Deputies arrived just before 5:30 p.m. and met with her in the garage to learn more about the situation. In the body camera footage, the woman told deputies she called 911 because her husband told her to call and now he is mad that she called. As deputies continued further in the garage and into the house, the observed McDonald in the living room with a gun in his hand. On the body camera footage, deputies ask McDonald to put the gun away, but he refused. At this time, they placed the woman in a patrol car for her safety. Some deputies tried to negotiate with McDonald to come out the house unarmed, but he came out the house with the firearm. In the video, body camera footage shows the interaction between deputies and McDonald who refused to put the gun down. Later, body camera footage show deputies on the backside of the house and an armed McDonald. McDonald pointed his gun at deputies. According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies began shooting when he pointed the gun due to the threat upon their lives. However, it is unclear if McDonald shot at deputies. Body camera footage shows deputies arresting McDonald, as they called for medic, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
