It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At about 12:30 AM on April 25, 2024, Officer Alexander Smith from Florida State University Police noticed a black 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan drifting out of its lane while heading west on Stadium Drive. The driver shifted onto Hendry Street and then swerved into the bike lane before turning right onto Jackson Bluff Road. Officer Smith activated his emergency lights to pull the car over. The vehicle stopped at the Circle K gas station at 1520 Jackson Bluff Road. The officer stepped out of his patrol car and approached the driver, who was identified as 21-year-old Giavanna. While talking to her, Officer Smith saw signs she might be drunk and caught the smell of alcohol.Giavanna explained she was on her way home after leaving The Wilbury bar. The officer noticed she wore a wristband from the bar. She admitted to drinking earlier but said she was sober enough to drive. Because of her actions and words, Officer Smith asked her to get out of the car and do some simple tests to check her sobriety. The first test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, or HGN. Next, Giavanna was asked to walk in a straight line, heel to toe. She had trouble touching her heel to her toe with each step and swayed her arms for balance. The last test was to stand on one foot. She failed to lift her foot correctly and used her arms for balance again. Because she drove erratically, admitted to drinking, and couldn't do the tests properly, Officer Smith decided to arrest Giavanna for DUI. She was taken to Leon County Jail. She refused to give breath samples for testing. Giavanna was charged with DUI (316.193).
