A tense confrontation between a Little Rock police officer and a suspect escalated into a chaotic arrest after officers attempted to take him into custody. On May 15, 2026, shortly after 5:00 p.m., Little Rock Police responded to a disturbance at a Sunoco convenience store on West Roosevelt Road. According to the police report, 26-year-old Clifton Shelton had allegedly attempted to take a Black & Mild cigarillo from the store, although the clerk initially declined to pursue a report. An off-duty Pulaski County sheriff's deputy reportedly recognized Shelton and purchased the cigarette for him. Police later received information about an alleged assault involving a 56-year-old man near the store. The man described his attacker as wearing a red hockey jersey and a hat with ear flaps, matching the clothing Shelton was wearing. At approximately 5:41 p.m., Officer Katelyn Brewer located Shelton and questioned him about the earlier incidents. As Shelton walked away, Brewer continued following him and questioned him about the alleged assault. During the interaction, Brewer asked whether Shelton had a problem with white people and challenged him about whether he wanted to fight, while telling him she had the “right people” there. Moments later, another officer, Brad Forrester, arrived in a patrol vehicle. Shelton then ran from the officers. Brewer and Forrester pursued him into a nearby yard and deployed their Tasers. Body-camera footage shows Shelton raising his hands and repeatedly asking whether the officers were going to hit him before Forrester grabbed his jersey and a physical struggle began. Brewer fired her Taser, but it apparently did not stop Shelton. Forrester and Shelton exchanged blows as the struggle continued before both went to the ground. During the struggle, Brewer yelled that Shelton had grabbed her firearm. Shelton immediately denied the allegation. Additional officers arrived and several officers became involved in the struggle. After another officer successfully deployed a Taser, police were able to gain control of Shelton and place him in handcuffs. Shelton was medically evaluated by first responders before being taken to the Pulaski County Jail, where he remained in custody. According to the information provided with the footage, Shelton later pleaded not guilty to felony charges including attempted disarming of an officer and second-degree battery, as well as misdemeanor charges including resisting arrest, obstructing governmental operations, criminal mischief and fleeing. The Little Rock Police Department subsequently released the incident report and body-camera footage. The incident also drew criticism surrounding Officer Brewer's comments and the use of force during the arrest.
