Welcome to Texas Law Encounters. On Thursday, June 30, 2022, Deputy Myer and Deputy Peoples of the Harris County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to an apartment complex in Houston, TX, in response to a family assault. Upon arrival, the officers observed the defendant holding onto the complainant in the doorway of Apartment 3205. After separating both parties, the officers spoke with the victim, who informed them that she was on location to complete the final walk-through and cleaning of the apartment for move-out purposes. The victim explained that she was cleaning items from the apartment, as the lease was expiring the following day. She further stated that the defendant lived on location with her, despite not having a key or being on the lease. The victim also expressed concern that the defendant intended to squat in the apartment, as she was the only one listed on the lease. According to the victim, while she was finishing cleaning the apartment, the defendant arrived at the location and attempted to force her way into the residence. The victim, who was outside the apartment, attempted to lock the door. At this point, the defendant pushed her with full body weight in an attempt to move her away from the door, causing pain to the side of her body. The victim stated that she was holding onto the door handle with both hands during the assault. The victim further explained that the defendant then intentionally struck her hands with a closed fist approximately four times, causing her pain and discomfort. The victim informed the officers that the defendant had been arrested for assaulting her on June 16, 2022. She had originally listed the location of the apartment for the protective order but changed it after moving apartments due to the lease expiring. The officers confirmed with apartment staff that a two-month notice had been given by the victim for not renewing the lease, and there was no record of the defendant living at the location. The officers then spoke with the defendant, who stated that she came to the location after the protective order was lifted for that specific location. She found the victim moving her items from the apartment and cleaning it, and became angry when the victim attempted to lock the door on her. The defendant stated that the two began pushing each other with their body weight but denied striking the victim. 27-year-old Erin Newsome was arrested on one felony count of continuous assault on a family member and one felony count of violating a protective order. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.
