-Newman, CA. -September 22, 2023. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office on Monday released video footage from a crime spree last month that included robbery, carjacking and a high-speed chase and that ended with a suspect firing a stolen gun at deputies before he was shot by a deputy in an orchard. The suspect, 43-year-old Jason Benson Dingler, is still being treated at the hospital after being shot near the city of Newman on Sept. 22, according to the sheriff’s office. video released by the sheriff’s office includes home and business surveillance videos, deputy body camera and aerial helicopter footage from across several crime scenes. Here is a timeline of the crimes, according to the sheriff’s office. Dingler is accused of first breaking into a home on the 3000 block of W. Keyes Road at 1:09 a.m. and stealing the firearm and ammunition that he allegedly used while committing other crimes later in the day. Home surveillance footage allegedly shows Dingler kicking in a door to the home while shirtless. The home’s residents were out of town at the time, according to the sheriff’s office. Besides stealing a gun from the home, Dingler also stole clothing, the sheriff’s office said. Dingler is next accused of using the gun to carjack a Ford pickup truck at a home on the 5000 block of Muncy Road around 5:26 p.m. Surveillance footage from the home shows Dingler pointing a gun at a man there while falsely claiming to be a member of the military, according to the sheriff’s office “Call the cops and you’re dead,” the man with the gun can be heard saying on the footage after demanding car keys. Dingler is next seen on surveillance video stealing beer from a One Stop Market nearby at 5:27 p.m. with the gun holstered at his hip, according to the sheriff's office. As he left, a clerk triggered an alarm, the sheriff’s office said. The California Highway Patrol next noticed the stolen truck at 5:33 p.m. at the intersection of Grayson Road and Highway 33. A sheriff’s deputy tried to make a traffic stop as the vehicle drove southbound on Highway 33 in Paterson at 5:51 p.m. Dingler then led deputies on an 11-mile chase, reaching speeds of 85 mph, according to the sheriff's office. The chase ended when Dingler sideswiped another motorist and then crashed the truck into an orchard, the sheriff’s office said. After ditching the truck, Dingler ran into the orchard and fired multiple shots at responding deputies, as confirmed by aerial and body camera footage, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies taking cover behind their vehicles called on a loudspeaker for Dingler to put his hands up and were met with gunfire from the suspect, according to the sheriff’s office. Their patrol vehicle was hit four times, the sheriff’s office said. Two deputies went on to fire their weapons as Dingler began to walk in their direction and raised his firearm, according to the sheriff’s office. Dinger was shot around 6:26 p.m., according to the body camera footage released by police. After the shooting, deputies demanded Dingler move away from the stolen gun that was on the ground next to him. The deputies then provided medical attention once Dingler had moved far enough away, around 6:43 p.m., according to a time stamp on the video footage. Charges Dingler faces include five counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, seven counts of assault on a peace officer with a firearm, two counts of burglary, carjacking, kidnapping, robbery, assault with a firearm, reckless evading from a peace officer, hit and run resulting in an injury, being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of a stolen firearm, and brandishing of a firearm.
