The driver sideswiped a parked construction vehicle and hit a fire hydrant in front of 460 Newark Street. The officer immediately told the driver to stop and asked for her ID. She was later identified as 23-year-old Basma. During the conversation, Officer Kibitlewski noticed signs that suggested she was impaired. Suspecting she was under the influence, Officer Cynthia Rivera was called to the scene to conduct field sobriety tests. She began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. Then, Basma was asked to do the Walk and Turn test. She failed to touch her heel to toe on each step and took too many steps. The last test was the One Leg Stand. Basma struggled to lift her foot properly and put it down before the test was complete. Because of the crash, her signs of impairment, and her poor performance on the sobriety tests, Basma was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Her vehicle was impounded for 12 hours, following the rules of John’s Law. She was taken to the Port Authority Police Department in Weehawken for processing. Her passenger was taken to the hospital for evaluation. At the police station, Basma was read the standard statement for drivers. She agreed to give breath samples. The test showed a BAC of 0.18%, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08%. She was released after her arrest, pending her court date. She received tickets for DUI and reckless driving.
