On December 26, 2025, in Crescent City, California, Highway Patrol officers responded to a report of a male subject in a white Hyundai Santa Fe recklessly performing donuts in a parking area off Pebble Beach Drive while yelling that he was drunk. Officers arrived on scene and located the suspect vehicle parked in the turnout. The driver exited the vehicle and made contact with officers. During the investigation, officers observed objective signs of alcohol impairment, including watery eyes and difficulty maintaining balance. Officers determined the subject had been driving the vehicle prior to their arrival based on witness statements, his position in the driver’s seat, possession of the keys, and prior observation of the vehicle being driven earlier in the evening. An open bottle of alcohol was also located inside the vehicle within reach of the driver. The driver performed field sobriety tests but showed multiple signs of impairment. Based on the totality of the circumstances, officers determined the driver was under the influence and unable to safely operate a motor vehicle. A chemical breath test later produced results of 0.06% BAC, below the legal limit; however, officers concluded the driver was impaired at the time of driving. Even though 0.006% is extremely low, a driver in California can still be arrested under California Vehicle Code 23152(a) if officers believe the person is impaired by alcohol, drugs, or a combination. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the Del Norte County Jail, where he was booked on the following charge: 23152(a) CVC — Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol California Highway Patrol Officers involved: Officer E. Anaya ID - 23196 Officer D. Vincent ID - 021901 Officer Johnston ID - 24318 All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
