On December 24, 2023, Pullman Police Officer Emerson was in the local Walmart buying last minute gift wrap. He observed a young man carrying a case of Busch beer who did not stop at the cash registers. He confronted the 18 year-old and asked him for his receipt. He indicated that he already threw the receipt away. Officer Emerson then asked for his identification and he stated he didn't have one. Loss prevention was contacted and they were asked to review the security footage to see if the man actually purchased the beer. The loss prevention agent stated there was no way the man would have been sold beer without an ID. The man then proceeded to provide Officer Emerson with a false name and date of birth. When Officer Emerson ran that information through his dispatcher and it came back as invalid, the man attempted to run away. He tripped and a scuffle ensued. Several Walmart employees assisted Officer Emerson in gaining control of the suspect. He was eventually arrested and transported to the Pullman police station, where he was held for about 5 hours. All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
