On February 15th, 2024, deputies in New Mexico were dispatched to highway NM516 after receiving a call from a concerned driver who had nearly been hit by another driver in a white Jeep Cherokee. The caller reported that the suspect continued driving without stopping. Shortly after the call, deputies located the white Jeep Cherokee with visible damage pulled over on the side of the road. The vehicle was still running, and the suspect was in the driver’s seat, with two small children buckled in the back. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Farmington police officer Robert Shuttleworth with his two young children in the backseat, initially ignored commands to exit the vehicle and tried to access his phone. Upon exiting, the suspect exhibited signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot and watery eyes, and unsteady footing. The suspect refused to perform a Field Sobriety Test and was placed in handcuffs. While detained, deputies ensured the safety of the children and called EMS to check on them. The suspect agreed to a breath test, which revealed a 0.27 and 0.26 BAC, over three times above the legal limit. The children’s mother arrived at the scene and took custody of their two young children. The suspect was transported to the detention center and handed over to jail staff. The initial caller gave deputies a statement confirming the suspect's erratic driving behavior.
