REAL POLICE BODYCAM footage captures the tense beginning of a controversial traffic stop that would lead to a $30 million lawsuit against Sylvania Township Police. This bodycam video documents the critical first moments when a Michigan food delivery driver with expired tags faced escalating commands from an officer. In this police bodycam footage from June 5, 2022, Officer John Tanner approaches a white SUV parked near a wooded area, immediately issuing commands: "Shut it off. Shut the car off. Shut the car off." The driver, later identified as Caitlin Taylor from Adrian, Michigan, had pulled into a driveway while making food deliveries, reportedly realizing it was the wrong address. The officer issues a specific directive: "Drop the keys out the window. Now. I said drop the keys out the window." He then radios for assistance: "4-7-3 step it out. 4-7-3 step." This communication, captured on bodycam, suggests the officer is requesting backup while continuing to focus on obtaining the vehicle keys. As Taylor appears hesitant, the officer escalates his warnings: "Drop the keys out the window. I'm not going to ask you again." He then makes another radio request: "34, 34. Go ahead and give me the air." The officer characterizes the situation to dispatch: "She's noncompliant." This assessment, recorded on bodycam, establishes his perception of the interaction. The commands continue with added threats of arrest: "Drop the keys out the window. Ma'am, don't... You're gonna go to jail for obstructing. Drop the keys out the window. Because you're not listening to me." The officer explains his tactical reasoning: "I'm not gonna approach you until I got the car secured. So drop the keys out the window, Ma'am. You're gonna go to jail." He then issues additional commands: "Get your hands up where I can see 'em. Hands up. Drop the keys out the window." After further radio communication, the officer directs: "Then step out of the car... Step out. Right there. Anybody else in the car? Turn around and face away. Turn around and face away from me." When Taylor doesn't immediately comply, the officer issues a taser threat: "You're about to get tased. I know- want to get tased? Turn around. Turn." This escalation from verbal commands to threatened force occurs within minutes of the initial contact. According to court filings, this incident led to a lawsuit seeking $30 million in damages, with Taylor's attorneys alleging excessive force, contradictory commands, and failure to properly explain the reason for the stop. This police bodycam footage captures the critical initial interaction that would subsequently escalate to physical confrontation and serious allegations of excessive force, raising questions about proper procedures during routine traffic stops.
