On June 14, 2023, Chamblee, Georgia police responded to a report of a stolen Amazon delivery — a couch, taken from an apartment complex's shared parcel locker. Surveillance footage from the building and a third-party locker vendor led officers to a neighboring resident. What started as a routine, low-dollar property crime investigation ends with a warrant arrest, a disclosed prior felony conviction, and a request that reveals what the suspect was really afraid of losing. We break down the Fourth and Fifth Amendment issues at play, the Georgia theft statute involved, and grade both the officers' and the suspect's conduct.
