On December 18, 2025, a routine shoplifting stop at a Canton, Ohio Walmart escalated in a matter of seconds — and body camera footage captured the entire encounter. In this episode, we break down what happened and the case that followed. Shane Newman and Katerina Jeffrey were detained by Walmart loss prevention over an alleged $55.50 theft. During a partial pat-down, an off-duty officer working a security detail did not locate a handgun concealed in Newman's bag. Moments later — just after dispatch advised that Newman had an active warrant — Newman drew the weapon. It failed to fire. He attempted to use it a second time, and it failed again. Conrad Piero, a Walmart loss prevention associate and former U.S. Marine, stepped in and disarmed Newman, allowing the officer to take him into custody. No shots were fired and no one was injured. In this breakdown we walk through the bodycam timeline, the warrant alert that preceded the incident, and Newman's prior record — a drug sentence, a domestic violence conviction, and a false-information conviction, each of which resulted in significantly less time served than ordered. We also examine how Jeffrey's case was ultimately resolved as a misdemeanor, and the charges Newman now faces, including attempted murder, felonious assault on a peace officer, robbery, and weapons and drug counts. He was held on a $1 million bond and later entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, with a competency evaluation ordered by the court. For stepping in when it mattered, Conrad Piero was recognized with a civilian commendation, a mayoral proclamation, and a congressional commendation. This case is a reminder of how quickly an ordinary moment can change. Stay aware, trust your instincts, and stay safe.
