On March 19, 2024, at approximately 9:54 AM, the Alliance Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifter at 2700 W. State St. Asset Protection had informed dispatch that the suspect had concealed items on their person and left the store parking lot in a red Chevy Avalanche. An officer spotted the suspect vehicle leaving Walmart's parking lot and conducted a traffic stop in the 2500 block of W. State St. The officer approached the vehicle and identified the defendant, Christopher C. Cottrill, seated in the front passenger seat, and the driver, Cassie R. Kuligowski. Both were informed of their Miranda rights and the reason for the stop. They denied stealing anything but admitted to being in the store. A LEADS check revealed Cottrill had an active arrest warrant from Canton P.D. The officer instructed Cottrill to exit the vehicle and observed several items of merchandise in a duffel bag he was holding. Cottrill was arrested on the warrant. A search of his person and bag revealed $312.88 worth of stolen goods from various departments, including sporting goods, cosmetics, apparel, and health and beauty. Cottrill had knowingly selected several items from Walmart's shelves, concealed them, and exited without paying. He was transported to headquarters, booked into the Alliance Jail, and later transferred to SCJ for his Canton warrant. Cottrill was scheduled for a court appearance on March 22, 2024, at 1 PM for the theft offense. All stolen items were returned to Walmart, and an itemized receipt, surveillance video, and written report were provided by the store.
