On the 16th of May, 2023, officers in New Mexico received a call from a grocery store about an ex-employee. Anabel Betancourt, a former employee, was found under the influence in her blue Dodge Dart outside the store. She had been throwing trash from her vehicle and kicking the store’s front door while screaming before the arrival of officers. The whole situation started because she couldn't buy a piggy bank. Upon their arrival, officers discovered an open alcoholic drink and Betancourt's young child unsupervised in the back seat of her car. Surveillance footage from CCTV cameras verified reports made by store employees about Anabel's erratic driving earlier that night. Anabel agreed to perform Field Sobriety Tests before being arrested and taken to the police department to provide a breath sample. Anabel provided two breath samples that read 0.21 and 0.22 BAC (Blood Alcohol Content), above the legal limit is 0.08 BAC. Officers also issued Anabel a Notice of Revocation, confiscating her license in New Mexico. Anabel’s brother, Miguel Rodriguez, was also at the scene confessing to drinking alcohol and parking the vehicle, as verified by CCTV. After he failed his Field Sobriety Tests, he was placed under arrest. Despite his two breath tests being below the legal limit (0.06 BAC), he was already under probation. He was subsequently charged with DWI - 2nd Offense & DWI with Driving While Intoxicated With A Minor In The Vehicle. Officers contacted Anabel’s mother after her arrest.
