A traffic stop escalates dramatically when a driver, suspected of impairment, refuses to comply with officer instructions. The incident began when a vehicle was observed traveling 85 MPH in a 55 MPH zone on Route 15 North, prompting a pursuit and subsequent stop by law enforcement. Upon interaction, an officer immediately detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the driver, who then admitted to consuming wine earlier and also disclosed a pregnancy. This led to the administration of standardized field sobriety exercises, during which the driver explicitly refused to comply with instructions, prompting a direct warning from the officer regarding potential resistance and the consequences of non-compliance. Despite the refusal, the exercises continued, with observations indicating signs of impairment, including all six indicators on the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, and visible struggles with balance and instruction adherence during the Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand tests. Based on the totality of the circumstances, including her admissions, traffic infractions, and performance on the sobriety tests, the driver was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. At police headquarters, she provided breath samples, revealing a blood alcohol content of 0.14%.
