The Savannah Gold case: how a scheduled red light camera removal captured the truth behind a young woman’s disappearance. When 21-year-old Savannah Gold failed to clock in for her shift at a Jacksonville restaurant, a deceptive text message attempted to frame her vanish as a voluntary runaway. This case file reopens the timeline, the forensic evidence, and the decisive surveillance footage that exposed Lee Rodarte’s lies before the truth remained buried forever. On August 2, 2017, Savannah Gold arrived at the Bonefish Grill in the Mandarin neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, but never stepped inside. Moments later, her family received fragmented, misspelled text messages claiming she was running away with a new boyfriend. Her mother immediately suspected foul play after discovering Savannah's car parked in the lot with a deliberately slashed tire and her purse left in the back seat. Initial phone tracking showed her cell phone moving onto San Jose Boulevard before going completely silent, leaving investigators with a rapidly cooling trail and conflicting employee statements. Detectives from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office initiated non-custodial interviews, focusing on manager Lee Rodarte, who claimed he had not seen Savannah in weeks and fabricated stories regarding drug use and third-party abductors. However, physical evidence—including a fresh scratch on Rodarte's neck and heightened nervous responses—prompted investigators to review critical traffic camera footage. An intersection red light camera, slated for citywide dismantling just weeks later, captured Rodarte meeting Savannah in the parking lot, the struggle inside his vehicle, and the intentional slashing of her tire. Faced with undeniable surveillance footage and matching forensic evidence—including burn pit residue, soil analysis, and matching household materials—Rodarte eventually led dive teams to Savannah's remains in a hidden Westside Jacksonville pond. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison in 2021.
