On May 26, 2025, LAPD Van Nuys officers responded to a call about a white van riddled with bullet holes in the 13000 block of Sherman Way. The driver, 42-year-old Claudia Corugedo, was found behind the wheel. When officers discovered she had a felony warrant and tried to detain her, Corugedo resisted, pulled out a BB gun resembling a real pistol, and pointed it at her own throat. After a pursuit that ended in Topanga Division, Corugedo refused to surrender, still armed with the BB gun and a large machete. She advanced toward a residence, prompting an officer-involved shooting. She was struck, treated at the scene, and transported to a local hospital. She survived and was booked on felony evading charges. No officers or civilians were injured. A BB gun and a machete were recovered.
