It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At around 2:13 AM on April 1, 2025, Patrolman Benero Bernal from the Westfield Police Department was called to a crash on Prospect Street. The caller said an overturned car was involved, and they were trying to flip it back over. When Patrolman Bernal arrived, he saw the vehicle was already upside down. He approached the driver, who was in a red 2003 Honda Civic, and saw that the car had hit a parked 2020 Honda CR-V. The driver, a 24-year-old woman named Brianna, explained she was heading to her friend’s house after leaving her shift at Crossroads in Garwood, NJ. While talking to her, the officer could smell alcohol and noticed signs she might be impaired. Brianna admitted she was on her way home after working as a bartender and later confessed she had two beers earlier that evening. Paramedics arrived to check on her due to her injuries. They bandaged her fingers, but she refused to go to the hospital. After declining transport, Patrolman Bernal asked her to do some field sobriety tests right there on the sidewalk. The first test was the Walk and Turn. Brianna couldn’t keep her arms at her sides and didn’t follow directions properly. Next was the One Leg Stand. She failed to lift her foot correctly, miscounted, and put her foot down before completing the test. The last was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, which Sergeant Desiato performed. Because of the crash, the smell of alcohol, her earlier admission, and her poor performance on the tests, Brianna was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Her car was seized and kept for 12 hours under John’s Law. She was taken to the police station for further checks, while Officer Bace stayed at the scene until the vehicle was towed. At the station, Brianna read the standard statement for drivers and agreed to give blood alcohol samples. The tests took some time, with two 20-minute observation periods. Her breathalyzer results showed her BAC was 0.11%. After processing her, Brianna was released into the care of a sober adult, who signed a warning form on her behalf.
