On September 11, 2024, an incident occurred in Sea Girt, New Jersey where officers noticed a driver struggling to stay in their lane after striking a curb during an illegal U-turn. Upon initiating a traffic stop, officers detected a strong odor of alcohol and noted the driver had bloodshot eyes. The driver admitted to coming from a friend's house but initially denied drinking. After stepping out for standardized field sobriety tests—including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand—the driver showed significant signs of impairment, even removing their shoes during the assessment. The individual was placed under arrest and transported for processing. At headquarters the driver ultimately registered a blood alcohol content of 0.138 percent and was issued several New Jersey Title 39 traffic summonses before being released to a parent. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
