On May 17, 2026, a routine encounter in Fort Smith, Arkansas, turned into a violent confrontation when Fort Smith Police Officer Kyle Newman was shot in the neck during a DWI investigation. The Fort Smith Police Department is now releasing video related to the incident involving 27-year-old Joshua Keller. According to police, officers were investigating a group of juveniles near the amphitheater off McClure Drive when they noticed a white pickup truck in a nearby ditch. Officer Newman approached the vehicle and began speaking with Keller, who police identified as the driver. Investigators say Keller became argumentative, got back into the truck and attempted to flee. As Officer Newman attempted to detain him, police say Keller produced a handgun and shot Newman in the neck. Newman returned fire as he fell to the ground. Another officer immediately responded to the sound of gunfire, called for assistance and began providing aid. Keller then fled in the pickup truck, leading officers on a pursuit onto Interstate 540. The pursuit ended when the truck crashed near the Grand Avenue exit. Police say another officer-involved shooting occurred as officers approached the vehicle, and Keller was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered from the vehicle.
