On November 8, 2022, Wausau Police responded to a report of a theft from a motor vehicle involving a black military-style backpack containing sensitive personal items, including documents and banking information. Unknown to the suspect, the backpack contained an Apple AirTag and that single device changed everything. Using AirTag location data, officers were led to a residence in Wausau, Wisconsin. When police made contact with the resident, he denied any knowledge of the stolen property. Officers then conducted a lawful search of garbage cans outside the home and discovered credit cards and items linked to the reported theft, strengthening probable cause. While on scene, officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the residence. Due to concerns about evidence destruction, police secured the home and applied for a search warrant. After the warrant was approved, officers executed the search and located the stolen backpack inside the residence, confirming the AirTag tracking and linking the home to the crime. During the investigation, tensions escalated when a woman associated with the residence arrived on scene. She became verbally aggressive, refused commands, and physically resisted officers during her arrest. Police used force to gain control, including handcuffing her. She was read her Miranda rights following the arrest. A separate individual was detained after officers detected the odor of marijuana in a vehicle, though no charges were filed at that time. This video breaks down the body worn camera footage, the legal steps police took, how AirTag tracking factored into probable cause, why trash searches are lawful, and how a routine theft investigation turned into a full search warrant execution.
