Body camera video clip from an El Cajon Police Department critical incident video regarding the officer involved shooting of Keith Crenshaw. Location: El Cajon, San Diego County, California, United States Date: February 12, 2020 (Wednesday) El Cajon Police Department: TYPE OF INCIDENT: Officer Involved Shooting in El Cajon DATE OCCURRED: February 12, 2020 at approximately 8:57 am LOCATION OF OCCURRENCE: 500 Block of South Johnson Avenue RESUME OF INCIDENT: On 02/12/2020 Officers from the El Cajon Police Department received information from an out-of-state law enforcement agency that a stolen vehicle from their jurisdiction was within the City of El Cajon. The stolen vehicle was described as a tan 2008 Kia Amanti sedan. The reporting agency directed officers to where the vehicle was located. ECPD Officers located the stolen vehicle in the 500 block of South Johnson parked on the side of the road. The officers confirmed the vehicle was stolen. As the officers coordinated their approach to the vehicle, they discovered an adult male asleep in the driver’s seat. As they planned their approach to arrest the suspect and prevent his escape, he woke up. The officers identified themselves as police officers and immediately began giving repeated commands for the suspect to show them his hands. The suspect refused to show his hands and repeatedly reached under his clothing and into his waistband. The suspect continued to ignore the officer’s commands and stated something similar to “Shoot me before I do it!” while reaching into his waistband. Believing the suspect was armed, one of the officers on scene fired two rounds, striking the suspect at least one time in the torso. The suspect continued to disobey the officer’s commands by refusing to show his hands. He told the officers, “Kill me please”. The suspect ultimately showed his hands, was removed from the vehicle, and was immediately given first aid until medics arrived. Medics quickly responded and the suspect was immediately transported and is being treated at a local hospital. No one else was injured during this incident and there are no outstanding suspects in this case. The suspect has been taken into custody for Auto Theft, a felony, and will be booked into jail once released from the hospital. No firearms were located in the suspect’s possession or in the stolen car. This is an on-going investigation in its early stages. The information contained in this release may be updated as new information becomes available. We appreciate the community’s patience as we are working hard to release accurate information during this complex investigation. The El Cajon Police Department encourages anyone with information regarding this incident to contact us at (619)579-3311 or San Diego Crime Stoppers at (619) 235-8477. PREPARED BY: Lt. Randy Soulard DIVISION: Public Information Officer DATE AND TIME: 02/12/2020 at 7:30 pm REVIEWED BY: Capt. Rob Ransweiler Michael Moulton, Chief of Police *Update* ... RESUME OF INCIDENT: The suspect from the Officer Involved Shooting that occurred in the 500 block of South Johnson has been identified as Keith Crenshaw, a 21 year-old male and resident of Arizona. After coordinating the investigations from both El Cajon PD and the Phoenix Police, as well as the notification of his family, Crenshaw’s identity is now being released to the public. Crenshaw is still receiving treatment at a local hospital and is in stable condition. After reportedly committing crimes in Arizona, Crenshaw drove to the City of El Cajon in the stolen car for unknown reasons. He has no known ties to this area. The El Cajon Police Department will be seeking charges against Crenshaw for Auto Theft and resisting a police officer. Both are felony charges. A felony warrant is also being sought by Arizona’s Probation Department for Crenshaw. The El Cajon Police Department encourages anyone with information regarding this incident to contact us at (619)579-3311 or San Diego Crime Stoppers at (619) 235-8477. PREPARED BY: Lt.
