Police body cam footage from a Florida traffic stop that should have ended with three tickets — and ended with an 18-year-old in handcuffs, her car on a tow hook, and someone driving out to collect a baby from the side of the road. She was doing 55 in a 35. She admits it on camera. Illegal windshield tint, an obscured plate, the wrong registration sticker — all real, all lawful reasons to stop her. I say so in this video, because knowing your rights starts with knowing when an officer is actually right. Then the tickets are written, and a second deputy shows up to "just make conversation." That conversation is the traffic stop, still running. Under Rodriguez v. United States (2015), a stop may last no longer than the time needed to complete its mission — but there is no limit on what they can ask you, and no probable cause needed for a search you agree to. She said yes. Then she volunteered where her gun was. Florida Statute 790.001(15) defines "securely encased" as, quoting: "in a glove compartment, whether or not locked; snapped in a holster; in a gun case, whether or not locked; in a zippered gun case; or in a closed box or container which requires a lid or cover to be opened for access." Her firearm was in a lidded box in the back seat. Florida law lets a person 18 or older carry it exactly that way in a private vehicle, with no license at all. Eighteen. Not twenty-one. Twenty-one is the age to buy from a dealer and the age to carry concealed on your body. Two different rules, two different numbers — and the deputy used the wrong one. This is a fourth amendment lesson about search and seizure, consent, and the exact sentence to say before anyone looks in your car. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 The moment the deputy loses it 0:25 Three tickets that should have ended it 1:14 The stop begins 3:34 Why this stop was completely lawful 7:36 The second deputy who is "just making conversation" 8:59 What the friendly questions are actually for 9:27 The gun comes out of a closed box 10:17 The consent search — and the word that hands it over 12:26 Rodriguez: a stop cannot outlast its own mission 14:14 Florida's definition of "securely encased" 16:16 18 is not 21 — the rule he had backwards 17:18 Handcuffs, and the call for the baby 19:18 The tow 22:49 The stop plays out, uncut 28:05 What to say at the window 29:30 The Know Your Rights Playbook 📕 THE KNOW YOUR RIGHTS PLAYBOOK — every stop, search and warrant in plain English.
