The shooting took place near the 800 block of E. Flamingo Road, a few blocks east of Las Vegas Boulevard, Lombardo. Officers responded around 1 a.m. to a report of a domestic disturbance near Flamingo and University Center Drive. A man fired shots at two officers, both of whom returned fire, Lombardo said. Officer Truong Thai and a civilian were struck by gunfire. Thai was critically injured with a gunshot wound to the torso and pronounced dead at Sunrise Hospital. Lombardo said Thai, 49, was a veteran of the department who joined in 1999 and was assigned to South Central Area Command. "He's an honorable officer, a commendable officer," Lombardo said. "He'd done a fantastic job as part of the law enforcement community through his tenure here." LVMPD later said he held various roles during his career, including serving as a firearms instructor. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Tyson Hampton, fled the area and was later taken into custody with the assistance of a K9 unit in the area of Desert Inn Road and Eastern Avenue. He suffered minor injuries during his arrest, according to Lombardo. The sheriff said Hampton had a criminal history but declined to go into detail, adding that more information would be provided during the department's traditional 72-hour briefing on the shooting. The bystander struck by gunfire is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Lombardo noted that the department has been paying attention to the area where the shooting took place. Another police shooting took place near Flamingo and University Center last month, in which an officer shot and killed a suspect who had fired a round at her. "We're gonna ensure that we put all hands on deck to ensure that we provide safety in that community area," Lombardo said. This is the third police shooting in the Las Vegas valley this week after incidents involving both the North Las Vegas and Henderson police departments. No officers were injured in those two shootings. The suspect in the North Las Vegas police shooting was struck and killed, while Henderson police said no injuries were reported in their shooting. Gov. Steve Sisolak said he was deeply saddened to learn of Officer Thai's death. "Our officers put their lives on the line selflessly to protect us every single day," Sisolak tweeted. "Kathy and I are keeping your family, friends, and colleagues in our prayers." Officer Thai was assigned to the Community Policing Division, South Central Area Command on the graveyard shift. He joined LVMPD in 1999, serving this community for 23 years. In addition to being a patrol officer, he spent 3 years working in financial crimes, and another 3 years working in our training division. He was an experienced patrol officer who trained countless younger officers throughout his career. Truong loved being a police officer, but his off time was dedicated to his family. He is survived by his daughter, Jada (19) who loved playing volleyball with her father. Truong was a girls volleyball coach for many years and built a reputation throughout the volleyball community in Las Vegas for his dedication to the game and players. Truong’s family says he also had a passion for boating and loved visiting different destinations to enjoy the water. LVMPD will release funeral details as they become available.
