When Routine Traffic Encounters Turn Into Armed Confrontations | Police Bodycam Two traffic-related encounters. Two armed suspects. And in both cases, officers had only seconds to react when routine situations suddenly turned into armed confrontations. The first incident occurred on April 23, 2025, in Fairfax, Virginia. A Fairfax County police officer stopped a 1999 Toyota Corolla after noticing an expired safety inspection sticker. The driver, 36-year-old Jamal Wali, became increasingly agitated and told the officer he had a gun. As additional officers approached the vehicle, Wali opened fire. A single round struck two officers before crossing the roadway and breaking the window of another vehicle. A third officer returned fire, striking Wali four times. The second incident occurred on May 17, 2025, in Houston, Texas. Houston police responded to a three-vehicle crash on the North Freeway, but one of the vehicles — a green SUV — had left the scene. Officers later located the SUV only about one block away. During the investigation, officers observed that the driver appeared intoxicated. When they moved to detain him, the man lifted his shirt, reached toward his waistband, and pulled a concealed handgun. Two HPD officers opened fire. Officers immediately provided first aid until Houston Fire Department personnel arrived. The suspect died at the scene. At the time the incident information was released, his identity was still awaiting confirmation.
